Candy Padula - MMU Theatre Dept. Director
(802) 879-3344

I want to clearly outline all that is involved in the rehearsal process for the MMU Theatre Department productions. This information is important for students auditioning for shows at MMU and for their parents, especially if there are concerns about the commitment involved.

Regular rehearsals will take place after school on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:10-5:30 and on Saturday afternoons from 2:00-5:00. (For the Spring Musical - Saturday rehearsals will be held from 9:30 a.m -12:30.) Not everyone will be called to all of these rehearsals. Cast members will likely be rehearsing an average of 2 to 3 times a week. A schedule for the entire rehearsal period will be handed out to everyone at the first rehearsal.

As part of the audition process, I will ask students to sit down with their calendar of events and a parent and list ALL conflicts they might have through the performances dates. This means weddings, concerts, trips, college visits, doctors appointments. It’s important for the director to know these conflicts ahead of time. Once the rehearsal schedule is handed out, students (and their parents) will be required to schedule new appointments or activities AROUND THE REHEARSAL SCHEDULE.

Students must be prepared to take their rehearsal commitment seriously. Students will be expected to be at ALL of the rehearsals for which they are scheduled. The only excused absence is being absent from school during the academic day. My policy as The Theatre Department Director is: if a student has 2 Unexcused absences from rehearsals, they will be cut from the show. (I refer to this as the 2 Strike Policy.)

It’s important that everyone understand the expected level of commitment of those involved in The Theatre Department. Putting together a play is a big undertaking and we always strive to put on the best show possible. I want everyone to have a positive experience, but it’s important that students are aware that it will also be a lot of work, and they will be expected to take the commitment seriously. I don’t want students to overextend themselves and cause their schoolwork to suffer.

If students or parents have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me to discuss them. (802) 879-3344 or
