AI Out Mission Statement

We believe that the student body of MMU deserves a future in which they do not struggle with dependence on AI tools. Giving students the access to AI and opportunities to use it on assignments, especially those needed to graduate, sets the dangerous precedent that AI is acceptable. Even if teachers only permit the use of AI in research and artistic elements of assignments, students become incentivised to use tools in even more damaging ways. The margin for error for citing sources and plagiarism in colleges is 0% with a 3% rate of citation error being considered plagiarism. While over 30% of citations created by most AI’s are inaccurate, with the most common AI chat bot used in MMU, Chat GPT, exceeding over 60% inaccuracy of citations. We believe that in order to give students a rich and fair future we need to eliminate the use of AI in school entirely and provide more stringent repercussions for the use of AI in classrooms. While the effect of AI use on students is undoubtedly harmful, the negative impacts of the technologies unfortunately extend far beyond the future of education. AI data centers not only disproportionately contribute to CO2 emissions but also often exacerbate existing water scarcity issues. By allowing any form of AI in the classroom we not only teach students that a rigorous work ethic is unnecessary, but also that utilizing an ecologically irresponsible technology is not only acceptable but commendable.
