Gap Year Opportunities

AmeriCorps (800-942-2677) - Intensive national service programs to meet critical needs in education, public service, health, and the environment. Programs include tutoring and mentoring youth, building affordable housing, teaching computer skills, cleaning parks and streams, running after-school programs, and helping communities respond to disasters.

Castle Rock Institute (828-862-3759) - Off-campus study programs for college students that combine coursework with backpacking, climbing, biking, and paddling with locations in North Carolina, Australia, and New Zealand.

City Year (617-927-2500) - A national youth organization that provides services to US cities such as Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbia, Columbus, Detroit, New Hampshire cities, New York, Philadelphia, Providence, San Antonio, San Jose, Seattle, and Washington, DC.

Earthwatch (800-776-0188 or 978-461-0081) - Scientific research expeditions from St. Croix to Madagascar.

Global Service Corps (415-551-0000 ext. 128) - Provides international volunteers worldwide to live and work abroad on projects in developing countries.

Habitat for Humanity (800-422-4828) - A volunteer organization that builds decent, affordable housing for low income families.

National Outdoor Leadership School (800-710-NOLS) - offers courses in outdoor and leadership skills from 10 days to full semesters in wilderness classrooms.

Outward Bound (866-467-7651) Offers courses in adventure education from 5-85 days.

Sea Education Association (800-552-3633) - Provides academic study abroad programs called SEA Semester. Courses are available for high school and college students.

Semester at Sea (800-854-0195) - University of Pittsburgh offers semester at sea courses.

Student Conservation Association (603-543-1700) - Offers conservation service opportunities, outdoor skills, and leadership training. Students care for national parks and forests, historic and cultural resources, and urban green spaces.

United Nations Volunteers - - UN organization that supports human development and peace globally by promoting volunteerism and by mobilizing volunteers.

Up With People (877-264-8856 or 303-460-7100) - World Smart Leadership Program offers a semester long study abroad program that includes entertaining opportunities in music.

USA Gap Year Fairs - USA Gap Year Fairs is a national circuit of events that bring together reputable Gap Year organizations, interested students and parents, high school college counselors and Gap Year experts. Next fair in our area: 1/20/16 South Burlington High School 6-9 p.m.

Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (802-434-3969) The Vermont Youth Conservation Corps offers gap year opportunities through work and service. Conservation and Food and Farm Programs offer hourly work as well as AmeriCorps service. Leadership Through Agriculture and Conservation. World Learning (802-257-7751) School for International Training (SIT) prepares students to be interculturally effective leaders, professionals, and citizens. SIT fulfills this mission with field-based academic study abroad programs for undergraduates and accredited master’s degrees and certificate programs for graduates and professionals.
