Student Assistance Program

MMU Student Assistance Program

The role of the SAP is to:

  1. Offer education and supportive counseling to students who struggle with substance use and refer to services as needed;
  2. Be a resource for students who are impacted by substance use of others; and
  3. Provide intervention and prevention services to students at risk for developing substance abuse, particularly those who are not well connected to other providers.

Parents, friends, teachers, coaches and counselors can refer a student to the SAP or contact the SAP for confidential consultation. Students can also self refer. Once referred, the SAP will set up an appointment with the student to discuss concerns, assess needs and provide education and resource information. If warranted and agreed upon by the student, the SAP will set up subsequent appointments for follow-up support.

SAP services are strictly confidential. Federal regulations require that the SAP receive written permission from the student (12 and older) in order to release substance use related information shared by that student unless there are safety concerns that fall under mandated reporting.
